Vishnu’s Kurma Avatar: Foundation of the Universe

In another version of the Kurma story, Vishnu in his tortoise form represents not only the physical support of Mount Mandara during the Samudra Manthan but also the symbolic foundation of the universe.

At the time of the churning, the balance of the cosmos was in jeopardy. The mountain sinking into the ocean symbolized the fragility of the universe. Vishnu, in his infinite wisdom, took the form of Kurma, a giant tortoise whose back could support the weight of Mount Mandara and, by extension, the universe itself. Kurma’s role was not just to stabilize the mountain but to uphold the balance of creation, ensuring that both the forces of good (devas) and evil (asuras) could work together in a productive manner.

As Kurma held the mountain steady, the churning process continued, leading to the emergence of many cosmic treasures that sustained the balance of the universe. Without Kurma’s intervention, the churning would have ceased, and the world would have collapsed into chaos.

Moral: This version of the Kurma story emphasizes the need for a strong foundation in all endeavors. Whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, a stable base allows us to navigate the turbulence of life. Just as Kurma upheld the universe, we must uphold our values and principles to maintain harmony in the world.
