(Luke 24)

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, the day after the heartbreaking events in Jerusalem. Cleopas and his wife were making their way home to Emmaus, their hearts heavy with grief. The streets of Jerusalem had been filled with sorrow and confusion, and the news of Jesus’ death still echoed painfully in their minds. As they walked, they spoke softly to each other, trying to make sense of the turmoil that had shaken their world. Their hopes, once so strong that Jesus was the promised Messiah, had now crumbled to dust.

As they walked along, they hardly noticed when a stranger appeared beside them on the road. The man walked at their pace, and after a while, he spoke.

“You’re looking miserable,” he said kindly. “What’s the matter?”

Cleopas, surprised that anyone could be unaware of the tragedy that had just unfolded, turned to the stranger.

“You mean you haven’t heard?” he said incredulously. “You must be the only one around who doesn’t know what’s been happening. Jesus, our master, has been put to death. We were certain that He was the Messiah sent by God, but now our hopes have been dashed!”

The stranger smiled gently. “You’ve made a big mistake,” he said. “Don’t you remember what the prophets said about the Messiah? Isaiah, for example, compared Him to an innocent lamb led to the slaughter. The Messiah had to die, not because of anything He had done, but for the sins of others, in order to bring them peace and forgiveness from God.”

As they walked, the stranger explained all the scriptures that spoke of the Messiah’s suffering and death. He went from one prophecy to another, showing how it was part of God’s plan that the Messiah should die first and then rise again, conquering evil and death. Cleopas and his wife listened intently, the words of the stranger filling the emptiness in their hearts.

Before they knew it, they had reached their home. The stranger made as if to continue his journey, but Cleopas’ wife, feeling a deep connection with him, urged him to stay.

“Do come in! It’s getting late. Have supper with us,” she said.

The stranger agreed and entered their home. As they sat down to eat, the man took the bread, gave thanks to God, and broke it, sharing it with them. At that moment, Cleopas and his wife’s eyes were opened. They recognized the stranger for who he truly was. It was Jesus, alive!

But before they could say a word, Jesus vanished from their sight.

“Didn’t our hearts burn within us as He spoke along the road?” Cleopas said, his face radiant with the joy of discovery. “We must go back to Jerusalem right away and tell the others!”

Without hesitation, Cleopas and his wife rushed back to the city. When they arrived, they found the eleven disciples gathered together, their faces filled with excitement.

“Jesus has risen!” the disciples exclaimed. “He appeared to Simon Peter!”

Just as they were speaking, Jesus Himself appeared among them. He greeted them, and they marveled at His presence. Together, they shared a meal, and Jesus explained everything that He had shared with Cleopas and his wife on the road to Emmaus.

In that moment, everything became clear. The resurrection was real. Jesus had triumphed over death, just as He had promised. The world would never be the same again.
