The Test of Radha’s Love
In one of the many stories that highlight the depth of Radha’s love for Krishna, there is a tale where Krishna, wanting to test Radha’s devotion, appeared before her in disguise. Despite being eternally bound by love, Krishna, ever playful and curious, wanted to see how selfless and unconditional Radha’s love truly was.
One day, Krishna took on the form of a poor, wandering beggar. Dressed in tattered clothes, he arrived at Radha’s doorstep, his face and body covered in dust, making him completely unrecognizable. In this humble form, he approached Radha, who was busy with her daily chores, and asked for food.
“Lady,” the beggar said, “I am a poor man who has not eaten in days. Could you spare some food for me? I have nothing in this world and no one to help me.”
Radha, hearing the plea of the poor man, immediately stopped what she was doing and invited him in. Though she had little herself, she offered the beggar everything she had without a second thought. She brought out the finest food she could prepare with the modest means she had and gave it to him with love and respect. Her heart was full of compassion, and she treated the beggar with the same care she would offer a loved one.
As the beggar ate, he observed Radha’s demeanor. Her kindness, humility, and the selfless love she showed even to a stranger moved him deeply. Radha didn’t ask for anything in return, nor did she hesitate to give what little she had. The beggar then decided to test her further.
“Why do you help a poor man like me, when you yourself have so little?” the beggar asked. “What if I told you that Krishna has forgotten all about you and doesn’t think of you anymore? Would you still offer this kindness?”
Radha, upon hearing this, smiled serenely. “Krishna is always in my heart,” she replied. “Even if the world forgets him, even if he forgets me, it does not matter. My love for him is not dependent on what he remembers or how much he gives me. It is eternal and unconditional. I see Krishna in everything and everyone. Serving you is like serving him, for we are all connected through love.”
The beggar, still in disbelief of Radha’s unwavering love, continued, “But what if Krishna no longer loves you? What if he never returns to you?”
Radha’s eyes softened, and she responded with complete devotion, “Love is not about receiving. My love for Krishna is beyond any expectation of return. Whether he loves me or not, whether he remembers me or not, my love for him will never change. It is not about proximity, but about the connection of our souls. I need nothing from him but the joy of loving him.”
At that moment, Krishna could no longer hold back. The beggar’s disguise melted away, and Krishna appeared before Radha in his true divine form. Overcome with emotion, Krishna embraced Radha and said, “Your love is the purest, Radha. I tested you, but you have proven that your devotion is beyond any conditions or expectations. You love not for what you receive, but for the sake of love itself.”
Radha, ever humble, simply smiled and said, “Krishna, there is no test in love. When it is true, love does not need reasons or rewards. It just is.”
Krishna was deeply moved by Radha’s words. He understood that Radha’s love for him was not bound by the limits of worldly relationships. It was a reflection of the highest form of bhakti—complete surrender and devotion to the divine, expecting nothing in return.
Moral:
The test of Radha’s love illustrates the essence of true, unconditional love and devotion. Radha’s willingness to give everything she had, even to a poor stranger, and her unwavering faith in Krishna, despite the possibility of rejection, symbolizes the purity of selfless love. This story teaches us that true love is not about receiving or seeking validation; it is about giving, serving, and surrendering without expecting anything in return. Love, when it is pure, transcends all conditions and exists in its highest form—unconditional, eternal, and divine.
