The Tale of Rantideva’s Generosity and Compassion

In ancient India, there lived a noble and kind-hearted king named Rantideva. He was known far and wide for his generosity and compassion toward all beings, rich and poor alike. Unlike many kings who hoarded wealth, Rantideva believed that his true wealth lay in his ability to serve others. He often fasted and shared whatever little he had with those in need, viewing his people as family.

### A Test of Rantideva’s Compassion

One day, after a long period of fasting, Rantideva and his family had only a small meal to share among themselves. Just as they were about to eat, a poor, hungry man approached them. Rantideva saw the man’s weary face and, without a second thought, offered him food. The man ate heartily and left with gratitude.

The family then prepared to eat again, only to be interrupted by another visitor, a wandering Brahmin. Though they had less to offer now, Rantideva welcomed the Brahmin with a smile, giving him a share of the meal. When the Brahmin left, Rantideva’s family barely had enough to satisfy their own hunger.

But the tests were not over. Soon, a third visitor, a beggar, appeared, weak and thirsty. Moved by compassion, Rantideva offered his remaining water to the man, even though he was parched from fasting. Finally, just as he gave away his last morsel of food, a fourth visitor arrived in the form of a low-caste untouchable, asking for help. Rantideva, without hesitation, offered him the last of his food and water.

### The Revelation

When Rantideva had nothing left, the visitors revealed their true identities: they were powerful gods – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva – who had come to test his devotion and compassion. Impressed by Rantideva’s selflessness, the gods offered him anything he desired.

But Rantideva humbly replied, “I seek no wealth or power. My only desire is to serve all beings, to see others free from suffering, and to experience unity with every living soul.”

Touched by his pure heart, the gods blessed him, ensuring that his kingdom would always prosper and that Rantideva’s legacy of compassion would be remembered forever.

The story of Rantideva teaches us that true wealth lies in selflessness, compassion, and the joy of serving others. It reminds us that kindness and empathy are more valuable than any material possession and that real fulfillment comes from seeing others happy.
