Sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati were devoted worshipers of Lord Shiva. The couple had everything they could wish for, except for a child. They prayed to Lord Shiva for a blessing, and one day, he appeared before them. Shiva offered them a choice: “Do you want an ordinary son with a long life, or an extraordinary son who will live for only sixteen years?”

The sage and his wife chose the latter, desiring an exceptional child who would bring them honor and joy, even if it was for a short time. In time, they were blessed with a son named Markandeya, who was indeed an extraordinary child—wise, kind-hearted, and devoted to righteousness from a young age.

As Markandeya approached his sixteenth birthday, his parents grew sorrowful, knowing that his destined time was nearing. When he learned about his fate, Markandeya consoled his parents and declared, “I will not die. I will pray to Lord Shiva and seek his protection.” With unwavering faith, Markandeya devoted himself to intense meditation, chanting Shiva’s name day and night.

On his sixteenth birthday, as foretold, Yama, the god of death, arrived to take Markandeya’s soul. Seeing Yama approach, Markandeya clung tightly to the Shivalinga, praying for Shiva’s protection. Yama threw his noose around Markandeya, which also encircled the Shivalinga. This act enraged Shiva, who emerged from the Shivalinga in a furious form, warning Yama, “Do not dare to touch my devotee.”

A fierce battle ensued between Shiva and Yama. Overpowered by Shiva’s divine might, Yama ultimately retreated, unable to take Markandeya’s life. Shiva then blessed Markandeya with eternal youth, granting him the boon of immortality and proclaiming, “You shall forever remain sixteen, untouched by death.”

Markandeya lived on, eternally young and devoted to Shiva, embodying purity and devotion. Even today, he is celebrated as a symbol of unwavering faith and devotion, showing that true dedication can overcome even the power of death.

**Moral:** The story of Markandeya teaches us the strength of faith and devotion. True devotion to God can provide protection against even the greatest fears and challenges.
