Once upon a time, in a grand and gleaming castle, there lived a beautiful princess named Elara. She was clever, spirited, and known across the realm for her radiant smile and playful heart. As Elara came of age, the King and Queen began the noble but arduous task of finding a suitable prince for her hand in marriage.

They sent messengers across distant lands, inviting eligible princes to visit the castle and court their beloved daughter. Yet for all the effort and hope, the process quickly grew wearisome for the princess. Every suitor seemed to blur into the next—handsome perhaps, but dull, boastful, or completely lacking a sense of humor.

Many evenings, Elara sat through insipid conversations, politely nodding, her mind wandering far from the dinner table. What had begun as hopeful meetings had become nothing more than routine—a parade of pompous or clueless men. To keep herself entertained, she started a personal game during these otherwise tedious dinners: playful pranks on her unsuspecting guests.

If a prince left the table, he might return to find his fork hidden beneath the tablecloth or his goblet mysteriously filled with floating berries. Sometimes she swapped the salt with sugar or rearranged the food on their plates to create amusing patterns. Through these antics, Elara discovered much about her suitors—not through their rehearsed words, but through their reactions.

If a prince laughed or showed curiosity, he earned her attention. But those who blamed the servants or grew angry showed their true character—and were promptly crossed off her list of potentials.

A Different Kind of Game

One evening, at the request of her parents, Elara was to dine with a new prince, Prince Leopold, who had traveled many days to meet her. To her surprise, he was charming, quick-witted, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Elara found herself genuinely enjoying his company—but still, her mischievous nature stirred within her.

When Prince Leopold excused himself to the washroom, Elara decided to seize the opportunity for a new prank. She glanced down at her plate, piled high with parsnips—a vegetable she detested but endured for the sake of appearances. Inspiration struck.

Beside her, the prince’s chair had a discreet seam with a hidden zip that allowed access to the cushion’s stuffing. With nimble fingers and a sly grin, she carefully unzipped it, stuffing her unwanted parsnips inside until they were hidden from view. She zipped the cushion back up and composed herself just in time for Prince Leopold’s return.

He sat down as though nothing had changed, making no comment, no suspicious glance, no fidgeting. Curious, Elara inquired, “Is everything to your liking, my prince?”

“Everything is superb, princess,” he replied with an easy smile.

Elara was disappointed. She had expected at least a puzzled reaction—yet the prince seemed entirely unfazed. Determined to maintain her playful spirit, she excused herself to powder her nose, leaving the table momentarily.

But Prince Leopold was no fool. Upon sitting, he had felt the odd, lumpy cushion and immediately guessed that the princess had played a trick on him. When she left, he quickly inspected the seat and chuckled at the parsnips hidden within. Seizing his chance, he decided to return the favor.

He gathered the parsnips from his own plate, placing them artfully on the princess’s plate in the shape of a wide, cheeky smiley face. Then, with a grin of satisfaction, he quietly switched their chairs.

The Perfect Match

When Elara returned, she froze momentarily at the sight of the parsnip smiley face. She burst into laughter, realizing the prince had uncovered her ruse—and matched her wit with his own.

She sat down, still chuckling—until a soft squelch sounded from beneath her. Startled, her eyes widened as she realized: the prince had switched the chairs! Now, she was the one seated on a parsnip-stuffed cushion.

Prince Leopold leaned forward with a sly grin. “Is everything to your liking, Princess?”

Trying to stifle her laughter, Elara composed herself. “Yes, everything is… delightful,” she said, eyes sparkling.

At that moment, Elara knew she had found her match—not just in nobility, but in spirit. She reached out, taking his hand with a warm smile. “You, dear prince, are the one for me. And together, we shall never serve parsnips again.”

And from that day forward, parsnips were banished from the castle forever. Instead, it echoed with laughter, play, and the joy of a prince and princess who found love in cleverness and shared humor.

Moral of the Story

A sense of humor and the ability to laugh together often reveal more about a person than words ever could. True companionship is built on playfulness, wit, and the joy of shared mischief.
