Long ago, in a time when the world was still young and the skies were clearer than we know today, there was a man who lived peacefully in a quaint cottage on a grassy hilltop. The townsfolk often saw him sleeping under the open sky, bundled in a blanket, with only the moonlight to keep him company. He did this every night—except once each month, when the moon disappeared from the sky. On those nights, he retreated inside to sleep.

When asked why he preferred the outdoors under the moonlight, the man simply smiled and said,

“I’m keeping a promise I made to someone very special.”

Few knew what he meant, but my Great Uncle Gus, who always seemed to know the oldest and oddest stories, told me the tale—and now I’ll tell it to you.

The Marshland of Marshton

Ages ago, there was a marshy village named Marshton, built in the heart of swampy wetlands. Life was peaceful during the day, with villagers going about their business freely. At night, the kind and radiant Moon watched over them, bathing the land in silver light, ensuring that the Evil Things—goblins, trolls, and witches—remained hidden, for these creatures dared not enter the glow of moonlight.

However, once every month, the Moon rested, and the sky turned pitch black. That night, known as the New Moon, was when the Evil Things emerged, creeping through the dark marshlands in search of victims to haunt, hex, or harm.

The Moon’s Curiosity

The Moon, gentle and protective, grew curious about the creatures that plagued Marshton in her absence. She longed to see them with her own eyes. So, one New Moon night, she descended to Earth, taking the form of a beautiful woman with hair that shone as brilliantly as the moon herself. She covered her glowing locks with a heavy black cloak and ventured into the marshlands alone.

But the Moon was unaccustomed to walking the soft, muddy earth. She slipped, reaching for a tree branch to steady herself—only to find it enchanted! The branch twisted and coiled around her wrists, binding her tightly. She was trapped, unable to free herself. And though she had taken human form, she had no knowledge of human speech, so she couldn’t cry for help.

A Chance Encounter

While she trembled with fear, a young man from Marshton stumbled into the marsh, having wandered too far from home. Suddenly, three hideous goblins attacked him. He cried out, but no one was near to hear—except the trapped Moon.

Desperate to help, the Moon struggled against the enchanted branch. As she twisted and fought, her hood fell back, and her luminous hair unleashed a radiant beam of light. The goblins screamed, blinded by the brilliance, and fled back into the shadows.

The man, too relieved to wonder about the miraculous light, ran home without ever knowing who had saved him.

The Moon is Lost

Now, however, the Evil Things had seen her true form. They knew who prevented their nightly reign of terror—and they plotted against her. When the sun rose, the Moon was still ensnared, her strength drained.

That night, and for many nights after, the Moon did not rise. The sky remained empty, and darkness consumed the marshlands. The Evil Things ran rampant, spreading fear across Marshton.

But one man remembered—the young man saved by the beam of light. Realization struck him:

“It was she who saved me… and I abandoned her!”

Determined to make amends, he ventured into the marsh as night fell, searching the damp landscape until he found her, still bound and lifeless.

A Promise of Protection

He knelt beside her, cradling her glowing head, and whispered,

“I owe you my life. I swear I will protect you, even if I must give my life to do so.”

As he spoke, shadows crept from all sides—goblins, trolls, witches—all closing in for the kill. Yet the man stood firm, his promise unwavering.

Then, something miraculous happened. The Moon stirred. Moved by the man’s devotion, she awoke and radiated a blinding, pure light that chased the Evil Things away.

By dawn, the woman had vanished, and the Moon was back in the sky, shining more beautifully than ever.

A Love Beyond the Sky

Touched by his sincerity and bravery, the Moon returned to Earth during every New Moon to spend the night with the man she now loved. The two became inseparable. They married, blending earth and sky in their union.

Thus, the man made it his life’s mission to sleep outdoors under the moonlight, staying as close to his beloved as possible. Only on the New Moon, when she visited him on Earth, would he sleep indoors, hand in hand with his luminous wife.

When the man finally passed away, the Moon used her celestial magic to bind his spirit to hers forever. And so, if you look up on a clear night, you might see his face in the moon’s surface—forever known as The Man in the Moon.

At least, that’s what Great Uncle Gus says. And Uncle Gus? He knows a lot of things.

Moral of the Story

A promise made in sincerity holds the power to awaken even the coldest of hearts. True love transcends even the divide between heaven and earth, living on in stories, stars, and the moon itself.
