As King Vikramaditya continued his quest to capture the elusive spirit Betal, he ventured deep into the dark forest where the spirit resided. Each time Vikram sought to capture Betal, he was met with a new tale filled with riddles and moral lessons.

This time, Betal began to narrate the story of a young girl named Malini, known for her honesty and virtue. Malini lived in a small village with her father, who was a humble farmer. They were poor but content, and Malini’s honesty was admired by everyone in the village.

One day, while her father was working in the fields, Malini found a beautiful golden necklace lying in the grass. Knowing it likely belonged to someone else, she decided to take it home and announce her discovery. Malini believed that the rightful owner would come looking for it.

As she arrived home, she showed the necklace to her father. He praised her honesty and encouraged her to take it to the village square to announce her find. Malini went to the square and proclaimed, “I found this necklace in the fields. If it belongs to anyone, please come forward to claim it.”

Days passed, and no one came forward to claim the necklace. Villagers admired Malini’s honesty and praised her for her integrity. However, a wealthy merchant who had lost the necklace learned of her find. Greedy and deceitful, he plotted to claim the necklace for himself.

The merchant approached Malini, pretending to be the rightful owner. He said, “That necklace is mine! I can prove it if you give it to me.” Malini, being honest, asked, “If it belongs to you, can you describe it?” The merchant described it in detail, but his description was false. Malini, sensing something amiss, refused to give it to him without proof.

Angered by her refusal, the merchant tried to intimidate Malini, claiming that if she did not return the necklace, he would accuse her of theft. Undeterred, Malini stood her ground. She declared, “I will not part with the necklace unless the true owner comes forward to claim it.”

Word of the situation spread through the village, and people began to gather. Malini’s bravery in standing up to the merchant impressed them, and they supported her, vowing to stand by her side.

Finally, the true owner of the necklace, a widow who had lost it in the marketplace, came forward and recognized the necklace. She explained how it had sentimental value and how she had searched for it everywhere. Upon hearing her story, Malini willingly returned the necklace, proving her honesty and integrity to all.

The merchant, exposed for his deceit, was shamed before the villagers. They honored Malini not only for her honesty but also for her courage in standing up against greed and dishonesty.

As Betal concluded the tale, he posed a question to Vikram: “O King, what is the moral of this story?”

Vikram replied, “The story teaches us that honesty and integrity are invaluable virtues. Even in the face of adversity, standing up for what is right brings honor and respect. True wealth lies in one’s character, not in material possessions.”

Betal, pleased with Vikram’s wise response, acknowledged his understanding. However, as always, he reminded Vikram that he had broken his silence, and thus he returned to his tree, leaving Vikram to continue his pursuit.

**Moral:** This tale emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity in one’s character. It shows that standing firm in one’s principles can lead to respect and admiration, even in difficult situations. True courage comes from the strength to do what is right, regardless of the challenges one may face.
