Once Upon a Time by the Riverside

Long ago, a young hawk lived alone in a tree by the riverside. Handsome and strong, he soared the skies with elegance. Yet, beneath his majestic wings, he carried a heavy burden: loneliness. He had no friends to share his life or his joys.

One day, his solitary world shifted when he spotted a beautiful she-hawk perched on a nearby tree. Her feathers glistened in the sunlight, and the hawk’s heart soared. Filled with hope, he asked her to marry him. The she-hawk, wise and kind, smiled and replied, “I cannot marry someone who has no friends. A partner with friends is strong and reliable.”

Determined to win her heart, the hawk promised, “I will make three friends. Will you marry me then?” She nodded, and the hawk set out on a journey that would teach him a lifelong lesson about friendship.

The Quest for Friendship

The hawk soared over rivers and forests, searching for companions. His first encounter was with a gentle tortoise sunning himself by the riverbank. Landing gracefully, the hawk asked, “Dear tortoise, will you be my friend? If ever I am in need, will you help me?”

The tortoise, wise and calm, agreed. “You can count on me. Call me, and I shall come.”

With newfound hope, the hawk flew on, soon spotting a graceful osprey diving into the water. “Will you be my friend?” he asked. The osprey, known for her sharp vision and loyalty, replied, “Of course. I will stand by you whenever you need me.”

Encouraged by his success, the hawk ventured deeper into the jungle. There, he approached a mighty tiger resting beneath the shade of a tree. “Will you be my friend and protector?” the hawk asked, his voice steady.

The tiger, impressed by the hawk’s bravery, said, “From this day forward, you are my friend. If danger ever comes your way, call me, and I shall help.”

With three loyal friends by his side, the hawk returned to the she-hawk, brimming with confidence. “I have made three friends—a tortoise, an osprey, and a tiger. Will you marry me now?”

The she-hawk, true to her word, agreed. They were soon married, and the three friends attended the joyous celebration. The hawk and his new bride built a nest and, over time, welcomed two adorable baby hawks into their lives.

Trouble at the Riverside

One fateful evening, as the hawk family rested in their nest, two hunters arrived beneath their tree. Exhausted and hungry, the men failed to catch fish or game that day. As darkness fell, they decided to spend the night under the hawk’s tree, lighting a fire to keep warm.

The flames grew, sending smoke spiraling into the air. The baby hawks, disturbed by the heat and smoke, began to cry. Hearing their cries, one hunter said, “There are birds on this tree. Let’s catch them and roast them for dinner.”

The hawk parents panicked. The she-hawk reminded her mate, “This is the time to call your friends.”

The Osprey’s Courage

The hawk first sought help from the osprey. “My babies are in danger! Hunters are beneath our tree, and they mean harm.”

The osprey quickly devised a plan. “Go back and protect your babies. I will handle the hunters.”

Diving into the river, the osprey soaked her feathers and flew over the hunters’ fire. Water from her wings doused the flames. She repeated this clever act again and again, frustrating the hunters.

“They’re putting out our fire!” one hunter growled. “We’ll relight it.”

But the osprey, unyielding, continued to extinguish the fire with her wet feathers, buying time for the hawk to call for more help.

The Tortoise’s Strength

Next, the hawk flew to the tortoise, explaining the danger. The tortoise reassured him, “Don’t worry. I will distract the hunters. Go protect your family.”

As the hunters tried once more to light a fire, the tortoise crawled near. One of the hunters exclaimed, “Look, a giant tortoise! Forget the birds; let’s catch him instead.”

The hunters tore their shirts to make a rope, tying one end to the tortoise’s legs and the other to their waists. But they underestimated the tortoise’s strength. He pulled them into the river with ease. Struggling in the water, the hunters had no choice but to cut the rope and swim back to shore, shivering and shirtless.

The Tiger’s Roar

Still determined, the hunters began collecting twigs to light the fire once more. This time, the hawk flew to the tiger. “My family is still in danger. Please help.”

Without hesitation, the tiger roared and raced toward the riverbank. As one hunter prepared to climb the tree, he froze in terror at the sight of the tiger. Dropping everything, the hunters ran for their lives, never looking back.

The Hawk’s Gratitude

With the hunters gone, peace returned to the riverside. The hawk thanked each of his friends—the osprey, the tortoise, and the tiger—for their courage and loyalty. He realized that true friends are treasures, offering strength and support in times of need.

The she-hawk smiled at her husband. “Friendship is a gift that enriches life. You are fortunate to have learned its value.”

Final Thoughts

The hawk’s journey teaches a timeless lesson: friendships are built on trust, loyalty, and mutual support. Life’s challenges become manageable when we have the love and help of true friends. In the end, it’s not wealth or strength that makes us strong—it’s the bonds we share with others.
