As King Vikram carried Betal, Betal began recounting a story of ultimate sacrifice and loyalty.

Once, Virsen, the loyal guard of a king, came across a weeping woman. Concerned, he asked her the reason for her sorrow. She revealed her true identity, saying, “I am the goddess who protects the king. A powerful demon has defeated me, and now I am unable to protect him. His life is in grave danger, but it can be saved if someone sacrifices their life to Goddess Kali.”

Determined to save his king, Virsen returned home and told his son of the goddess’s words. Without hesitation, his son volunteered to sacrifice himself and offered his life in front of Goddess Kali’s idol. When Virsen’s wife learned of her son’s death, she was so heartbroken that she ended her life as well. Overcome with guilt and sorrow, Virsen too took his life, believing he had failed his family.

When the king heard of the tragic events, he was overwhelmed with grief, realizing he had lost his most devoted servant and his family. In despair, the king himself gave up his life, unable to bear the loss.

After finishing the tale, Betal asked Vikram, “Whose sacrifice was the greatest?” Vikram replied thoughtfully, “The king’s sacrifice was the greatest. Virsen and his family died out of duty and love, but the king sacrificed himself without any obligation. His death was born purely out of sorrow and respect for the loyalty of his servant.”

Betal acknowledged Vikram’s wisdom and, as always, flew back to his tree.

**Moral:** True loyalty and devotion inspire profound sacrifice, and sometimes the greatest acts of love come without obligation. This story reminds us of the depth of honor, duty, and respect that can exist between people.
