The Friendship of Krishna and Sudama

Sudama, a humble and devoted Brahmin, was a close friend of Krishna from their days at the Gurukul. While Krishna went on to become the king of Dwarka, Sudama remained in poverty, struggling to provide for his wife and children. Despite their hardships, Sudama’s heart was always filled with devotion for Krishna, cherishing memories of their friendship.

One day, tired of watching her husband and children starve, Sudama’s wife suggested he seek help from Krishna. Though reluctant at first, as he was too proud to ask for assistance, Sudama eventually agreed, realizing that a visit to his dear friend was long overdue. He thought it would be inappropriate to visit empty-handed, so he took with him a small handful of puffed rice, a humble gift that he knew Krishna had once loved.

When Sudama arrived at Krishna’s grand palace in Dwarka, he felt overwhelmed by the splendor and hesitated to step inside. But as soon as Krishna saw his friend, he rushed forward with joy, embracing Sudama with tears in his eyes. Krishna’s warmth and genuine happiness reminded Sudama of their unbreakable bond, erasing all feelings of inferiority from his heart.

Sudama spent the night at the palace, treated with kindness and respect, forgetting all his troubles. When he returned home the next day, he was astonished to find that his small hut had transformed into a grand mansion. His family, once dressed in worn clothes, now wore fine garments, and the house was filled with food and all the necessities they had once lacked. In that moment, Sudama knew Krishna had blessed him, not for the value of his gift, but for the love and devotion that accompanied it.
