During their exile in the Dandaka forest, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived in peace, encountering sages and fulfilling their dharma. However, their tranquil life was soon disrupted by the demon king Ravana, who desired to take revenge on Rama for defeating his sister Shurpanakha.

Ravana devised a cunning plan to abduct Sita, knowing that Rama would be her protector. He enlisted the help of his demon ally Maricha, who transformed himself into a beautiful golden deer to lure Sita. When Sita saw the deer, she was enchanted and asked Rama to capture it for her. Though he suspected foul play, Rama agreed and pursued the deer deep into the forest.

As Rama chased the deer, Maricha, in his final moments, imitated Rama’s voice, calling out for help. Sita, hearing the cry, feared for her husband’s life and urged Lakshmana to go after him. Reluctantly, Lakshmana left, but not before drawing a protective boundary, the Lakshmana Rekha, around their hut, warning Sita not to step outside it.

In the absence of Rama and Lakshmana, Ravana appeared in the guise of a wandering ascetic. He tricked Sita into crossing the protective boundary, and as soon as she did, he seized her and carried her away to Lanka in his flying chariot.

Sita cried out for help, but none could stop the powerful Ravana. Thus, Sita was taken prisoner in Lanka, setting the stage for Rama’s quest to rescue her.

Moral: Evil may use deceit, but those who walk the path of righteousness will ultimately overcome.
