Tenali Raman’s Witty Escape from the Rain
One rainy evening, Tenali Raman set out on a journey without anticipating the heavy downpour that soon drenched him to the bone. Determined to continue, Raman pressed on, shivering from the biting cold. Seeking warmth, he stopped at a nearby shop selling meat cutlets.
Inside, the warmth of the stove was tantalizing, but the space around it was crowded. Shivering and desperate for heat, Raman devised a clever plan. He turned to the shopkeeper and announced, “My horse is starving. It needs four meat cutlets.”
The shopkeeper and the onlookers were taken aback. “A horse eating meat cutlets? Impossible!” one man exclaimed.
Curiosity got the better of them, and the crowd rushed outside to witness this bizarre claim. While everyone examined the horse, puzzled and whispering among themselves, Raman seized the opportunity. He sat by the stove, drying his soaked clothes and warming himself thoroughly.
As the rain eased, Raman purchased the cutlets and stepped outside. He held the food in front of the horse, but the animal showed no interest. Without missing a beat, Raman tossed the cutlets to a stray dog nearby, mounted his horse, and rode off.
The baffled crowd stood staring—not at the horse, but at the sly smile on Tenali Raman’s face, realizing too late they had been outsmarted.
