Tenali Raman’s Clever Experiment with Wealth
Tenali Raman, known for his wit and wisdom, had accumulated a vast fortune over the years. His wealth was so great that even King Krishnadevarayar would occasionally approach Raman for help when in dire need of money. However, Raman, being shrewd and wary of the king’s intentions, did not entirely trust him. There was a system in the kingdom that allowed the king to confiscate the wealth of wealthy individuals upon their death. Raman, suspecting that his family might not be taken care of after his passing, decided to conduct an experiment to test what would happen if he were to die.
To carry out his plan, Raman feigned illness and then pretended to die. The news of his “death” quickly spread throughout Vijayanagaram, eventually reaching the palace. As per the system, the king’s officials arrived at Raman’s house to collect his belongings, including his wealth.
Meanwhile, Raman, fully aware of what was happening, took all his money and placed it in a large box, which had small holes drilled for air circulation. Raman then climbed inside the box with the cash, effectively hiding himself while his wealth was being taken away.
The officials, unaware of his presence, confiscated the box and transported it to the palace. They assumed it was simply a box containing the deceased Raman’s wealth. Raman lay still inside the box, observing everything, while the officials delivered the box to the king’s treasury.
Upon reaching the palace, the king and his officials began to examine the contents of the box. When they opened it, they were stunned to find Raman inside, alive and well. He had successfully executed his plan to test whether the king would take care of his family or simply seize his wealth. The king, realizing he had been outwitted, was forced to admit the truth of Raman’s experiment.
Raman’s cleverness saved him from the king’s greed and ensured that his family would be provided for, even after his “death.”
Moral:
Trust is earned, and sometimes, a little wisdom and wit can expose the true nature of those in power.
