The Tale of Kakati

In a kingdom ruled by the wise and noble Bodhisatta, games of chance were a favored pastime among the courtiers. The king often hosted grand dice games, drawing participants from near and far. Among them was a strikingly handsome garuda king, who, unbeknownst to the Bodhisatta, harbored a secret affection for the king’s chief queen, Kakati. Their mutual attraction blossomed into a clandestine romance, leading them to escape together to the garuda’s secluded island.As days turned into weeks, the Bodhisatta grew increasingly forlorn without his beloved queen. Driven by longing, he dispatched one of his trusted minstrels to seek her out. The minstrel suspected that Kakati was with the garuda and set off on a quest to find her. Upon reaching the shores of the garuda’s island, he cleverly concealed himself within the garuda’s feathers and rode along undetected.Once on the island, the minstrel seized his chance and engaged in an affair with Kakati. After their rendezvous, he returned home in the same stealthy manner, hidden beneath the garuda’s plumage.The following day, when the garuda returned to play dice at the palace, the minstrel brought his lute and sang a ballad that recounted his secret liaison with the queen. The garuda king listened in disbelief as the minstrel’s song revealed the truth of Kakati’s betrayal. Filled with regret for not guarding her more closely and disillusioned by her unfaithfulness, he relinquished Kakati back to the Bodhisatta and vowed never to return to the palace again.

The Lesson of Temptation

In this tale lies a deeper reflection on human desires and temptations. In later times, during the life of the Buddha, this story served as a cautionary example for his disciples. One of them, tempted by worldly pleasures and considering abandoning the monastic path for a woman’s charms, found himself at a crossroads.
