In the ancient times, during the cosmic cycle known as Satya Yuga, the universe was kept in balance by the Vedas, the sacred scriptures containing all knowledge and wisdom. These Vedas were under the protection of Brahma, the Creator. But one day, a demon named Hayagriva, driven by greed and desire for power, stole the Vedas from Brahma and hid them in the deepest parts of the ocean.

The theft of the Vedas threw the world into chaos. Without the guiding knowledge of the sacred texts, darkness began to spread over the universe. Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the cosmos, saw the growing disorder and decided to intervene. To restore balance, he took the form of a small fish, Matsya.

Matsya appeared to King Manu, the first man, who was a righteous and wise king. As Manu was performing his rituals by the river, he found a tiny fish swimming nearby. The fish, speaking with a divine voice, begged Manu for protection. Manu, filled with compassion, placed the small fish in a jar. But the fish began to grow larger and larger, eventually outgrowing every container Manu placed it in. Finally, Manu released it into the ocean.

At that moment, Matsya revealed his true form as Lord Vishnu and warned Manu of a coming flood that would destroy all life. Matsya instructed Manu to build a great boat and gather pairs of all creatures, as well as the seven sages, the Saptarishis, to save life and preserve wisdom.

When the floodwaters came, Matsya, now a massive fish, towed the boat through the turbulent waters. Meanwhile, Vishnu in his Matsya form descended into the depths of the ocean and battled the demon Hayagriva. After a fierce fight, Matsya defeated the demon and retrieved the Vedas, restoring them to Brahma and saving the world from destruction. The boat safely landed on a high mountain, and life on Earth was able to begin anew.

Moral: The story of Matsya teaches us that divine intervention preserves the balance of the universe, and that wisdom and knowledge must be protected for life to flourish.
