Kurma Avatar: Lord Vishnu’s Support in the Churning of the Ocean of Milk
In ancient times, the gods (devas) and demons (asuras) were in a constant struggle for supremacy. The devas, having lost much of their strength due to a curse, sought the guidance of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver. Vishnu advised that both the devas and asuras must work together to churn the Ocean of Milk to retrieve the amrita, the nectar of immortality, which would grant them eternal life and restore balance to the cosmos.
The great mountain Mandara was chosen as the churning rod, and the powerful serpent Vasuki was used as the rope. The devas and asuras began pulling Vasuki back and forth, but Mount Mandara, massive as it was, began to sink into the depths of the ocean. This halted the churning, as neither side was strong enough to lift the mountain or continue their task without it.
At this crucial moment, Vishnu assumed his second avatar as Kurma, a giant tortoise. Kurma descended into the ocean’s depths and positioned himself under Mount Mandara, using his back as a foundation to support the mountain. With Kurma holding the mountain steady, the devas and asuras resumed the churning.
The churning of the ocean yielded many treasures, including the divine cow Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling tree Kalpavriksha, the celestial horse Uchchaihshravas, and eventually, the amrita itself. The nectar of immortality was given to the devas by Vishnu, ensuring their victory over the asuras and restoring peace to the cosmos.
Moral: The story of Kurma teaches that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, a strong and steady foundation—both literal and moral—can allow great tasks to be accomplished. Just as Kurma supported the mountain, we must ground ourselves in patience and strength when facing life’s difficulties.
