Harun’s Reward to Bahlool
One day, Harun al-Rashid ordered that a reward be given to Bahlool. When the officials presented the reward to him, Bahlool refused to accept it. Instead, he returned it, saying:
“Give this wealth back to those from whom you have taken it. If you do not return it to its rightful owners, the day will come when you will be held accountable for it. On that day, O Caliph, your hands will be empty, and you will have no choice but to regret and despair.”
Harun, hearing these words of truth, trembled with fear. Tears welled up in his eyes as he recognized the wisdom in Bahlool’s admonition. Deeply moved, he acknowledged the justice of Bahlool’s statement and remained silent, reflecting on the fleeting nature of worldly power and the inevitability of divine justice.
Once again, Bahlool’s courage and wisdom served as a reminder of the responsibility of leadership and the importance of justice and accountability.
