The Fox and the Goat: A Lesson in Caution
One dark night, a fox was wandering around in search of food. In the dim light, he accidentally fell into a well. He struggled to climb out but quickly realized that it was impossible. Exhausted and frustrated, he resigned himself to staying there until morning.
At dawn, a goat happened to pass by. Curious, she peered into the well and saw the fox at the bottom. “What are you doing down there, Mr. Fox?” she asked.
The sly fox, spotting an opportunity, replied, “Oh, I came down here to drink this incredible water. It’s the sweetest, purest water you’ll ever taste! Why don’t you come down and try it?”
The goat, eager to taste the water and not pausing to think, jumped into the well. After quenching her thirst, she turned to the fox and asked, “Now, how do we get out of here?”
The fox smirked and said, “I have a plan. You stand on your hind legs and lift me up. Once I get out, I’ll pull you up too.”
The naive goat agreed, and the fox climbed onto her back, then onto her horns, and finally leapt out of the well. Standing at the edge, the fox looked back and said with a grin, “Thank you for your help, dear goat. But next time, think before you act. Had you been wiser, you would’ve checked how to get out before jumping in.”
And with that, the fox walked away, leaving the goat trapped in the well to learn a hard lesson.
Moral: Think carefully before taking action, especially when the consequences are unclear. Rash decisions often lead to regret.
