One day, as Bahlool strolled through the streets of Basra, he noticed a crowd of people hurrying ahead. Curious, he called out to one of them, “Where are these herds of shepherdless animals rushing to?”

The man, with a smirk, replied, “They are going in search of water and grass.”

Bahlool chuckled and responded, “With water so scarce and grass so close, where will they find what they seek? By God, there was plenty of grass, but it was stolen. It used to be cheap and abundant, but then it was set on fire.”

Hearing Bahlool’s strange yet meaningful remarks, the crowd paused and turned back toward him. They approached him and asked, “This group is heading to the court of Muhammad ibn Suleiman, the cousin of Harun al-Rashid and the governor of Basra. Do you know why they are going?”

Bahlool asked, “For what purpose are they going to him?”

They explained, “Umar ibn Ata, a descendant of Umar ibn al-Khattab and a scholar of this time, is present in the governor’s assembly. These people wish to assess his knowledge and wisdom. If you join us, we can debate him and uncover the extent of his learning.”

Bahlool sighed and said, “Woe to you! Debating with a sinner only emboldens him in his disobedience. Sometimes it even casts doubt in the hearts of those who are perceptive and discerning. There is no doubt about God Almighty, nor any confusion or ambiguity about His truth. If you were truly seekers of knowledge and understanding, you would have been content with what you have already received from the people of wisdom and insight.”

Bahlool’s words left the crowd thoughtful and silenced. Through his sharp wit and profound wisdom, he reminded them that true understanding does not come from debates aimed at ego and showmanship, but from humility and the pursuit of genuine knowledge.
