Bahlool and the Rain Prayer
One day, Bahlool saw a group of people heading into the desert to pray for rain, as it had not rained for several years. They were accompanied by some schoolchildren. Bahlool asked, “Where are you taking the children?” They replied, “Since the children have not sinned, their prayers will certainly be accepted by God.” Bahlool responded, “If that is the case, then there should not be a single schoolteacher left alive by now.”
This story humorously points out the irony in the idea that children, who are considered innocent and sinless, should have their prayers answered, while adults (including teachers) who might carry their own shortcomings are excluded from such favor. Bahlool’s remark invites reflection on the nature of sin, innocence, and the value of prayer.
