Bahlool and the Most Beloved Person
One day, Harun al-Rashid asked Bahlool, “O Bahlool, tell me, who is the most beloved person to you?”
Bahlool, in his characteristic straightforward manner, replied, “The one who fills my stomach is the most beloved to me!”
Amused by the answer, Harun al-Rashid probed further, “And if I were to fill your stomach, would you consider me your most beloved?”
With a hearty laugh, Bahlool quipped, “Friendship cannot be based on promises or ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’!”
The court erupted in laughter at Bahlool’s wit. Through his humorous yet sharp response, Bahlool subtly reminded them that true affection and loyalty are grounded in actions, not mere words or intentions.
