A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed
Mrs. Teals was a quiet old woman who had recently moved into the big brown house at the corner of the street. She lived alone, except for her beloved cat, Britny—a sleek, watchful feline who ruled the house as if it were her own kingdom.
For years, two little mice, Bib and Bob, had lived safely within the walls of the very same house. They had never feared much before, scurrying about as they pleased. But everything changed when Mrs. Teals arrived with Britny. The moment they saw the cat’s sharp eyes and swift paws, they knew their peaceful days were over.
“We must be careful, Bob,” whispered Bib one evening as they peeked out from their tiny hole in the kitchen wall. “That cat is trouble.”
Bob nodded. “She looks like she’d eat us in one bite!”
From that day on, Bib and Bob tiptoed through the house, never daring to make a sound whenever Britny was near. But no mouse can stay hidden forever.
One afternoon, when Mrs. Teals had gone out, the two little mice decided it was safe to explore. They cautiously scurried across the wooden floor, sniffing around for breadcrumbs.
But as soon as they reached the middle of the room, a shadow loomed over them.
They looked up—and there was Britny, staring right at them!
With a sharp flick of her tail, the cat pounced.
Bib and Bob ran for their lives, their tiny feet pattering across the floor. Britny chased them, her claws clicking against the wood, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
Bib managed to dive into a small crack in the wall just in time, but Bob wasn’t so lucky. Before he could reach safety, Britny caught him with her sharp claws and pinned him down.
“Let me go!” squeaked Bob, wriggling with all his might.
Britny licked her whiskers. “Why should I? A little mouse like you would make the perfect snack.”
Bob’s heart pounded. Was this really the end?
Just as Britny was about to take a bite, something dropped onto her back with a loud thud!
The cat let out a startled yowl and spun around, trying to shake off the unexpected weight.
Bob blinked in shock. Sitting boldly on Britny’s back was Bib!
The brave little mouse held onto Britny’s fur tightly, giggling as the cat twisted and turned, trying to shake him off.
Britny jumped, she spun, she rolled—but Bib wouldn’t let go.
Seizing the moment, Bob scurried toward a nearby table and climbed up the leg as fast as he could. He reached the top just in time to see Britny shaking wildly, still trying to throw Bib off her back.
“Hang on, Bib!” Bob called.
“I’m trying!” Bib squeaked.
Thinking quickly, Bob spotted a large teacup sitting near the table’s edge. With all his strength, he pushed it forward.
The cup tipped over and tumbled down, landing right on Britny’s head!
Britny let out a dizzy meow and stumbled in circles, her tail swishing wildly. Her head was spinning, and in the confusion, Bib leaped off her back and landed safely beside Bob.
The two mice didn’t wait for Britny to recover. They ran as fast as their tiny legs could carry them, diving back into their hole just in time!
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then Bob, still catching his breath, turned to Bib and whispered, “You saved me.”
Bib grinned. “Of course! That’s what friends do.”
From that day on, Bib and Bob were never afraid of Britny again. They knew that, no matter what dangers they faced, they could always count on each other.
For they had learned a valuable lesson: A true friend is one who stands by your side, no matter how great the danger.
And that is why, as the saying goes—
“A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
