Bahlool and Declining a Pension
One day, Harun al-Rashid offered Bahlool financial support, saying, “Would you like me to take care of your living expenses? I can allocate an allowance for you from the treasury so that you no longer need to worry about your needs.”
Bahlool, ever wise, declined the offer and said, “If this arrangement had no flaws, I might have agreed. But there are three problems with it:
- You do not know what I need, so how can you provide for me adequately?
- You do not know when I need it, so how will you ensure I receive it at the right time?
- You do not know how much I need, so how will you give me the appropriate amount?
However, God Almighty, who has taken responsibility for my sustenance, knows all three perfectly. He provides what I need, at the time I need it, and in the amount that I require. Moreover, unlike you, He does so without anger or displeasure, even if I err.”
Harun, humbled by Bahlool’s faith and perspective, fell silent. Once again, Bahlool demonstrated that true reliance lies with the divine, not with the fleeting and conditional support of human rulers. His wisdom highlighted the deep trust he placed in God’s provision and justice.
