One day, a renowned scholar from a neighboring kingdom visited Emperor Akbar’s court. After bowing respectfully, he said, “Your Majesty, I’ve heard much about Birbal’s unmatched wisdom. People across lands speak highly of his intellect. If it pleases you, I wish to test his brilliance.”

Akbar, confident in Birbal’s abilities, summoned him and introduced him to the scholar. The scholar posed his question: “Tell me, Birbal, how many crows reside in your kingdom?”

Birbal listened calmly and replied, “Respected scholar, I shall give you an answer tomorrow.”

The Court’s Curiosity

The court was abuzz with speculation. How could anyone possibly count all the crows in such a large city? Later, Akbar privately asked Birbal, “This man seems absurd. How can you possibly provide an exact count of the crows? Shouldn’t you have asked for more time to think this through?”

Birbal smiled confidently and replied, “Your Majesty, this scholar is merely trying to outsmart me. Worry not, for he will soon learn a lesson in his own game.”

Birbal’s Answer

The next day, Birbal arrived at court. The scholar, already seated, eagerly awaited his response. “Well, Birbal,” he asked, “did you find your answer?”

With a calm demeanor, Birbal declared, “Indeed, I did. There are exactly 47,835 crows in this city.”

The scholar was taken aback. “How can you be so certain of this number?” he asked.

Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, I personally counted every crow in the city.”

The scholar, skeptical, pressed further, “What if there are more than this number?”

Birbal smiled and said, “Then some crows must have flown in from neighboring kingdoms.”

“And what if there are fewer?” the scholar countered.

“Ah,” Birbal said, “then some crows must have flown to other lands. Either way, my answer remains correct.”

The Scholar’s Defeat

The court erupted in laughter. Even Akbar chuckled at Birbal’s cleverness. The scholar, embarrassed by his attempt to outwit Birbal, admitted defeat. He left the city that very day, resolving never to challenge anyone again.

Moral of the Story:

Wisdom isn’t just about knowing the facts—it’s about thinking quickly, creatively, and confidently.

This tale reminds us of Birbal’s extraordinary wit and ability to tackle even the most impossible challenges with poise and intelligence.
