The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5, Luke 6)

Jesus’ teachings often took place under the open skies, away from the restrictions of synagogues, where religious leaders rejected His message. On a hillside one day, He began to teach His disciples and the crowds about the nature of true righteousness.

“If you want to be children of God,” Jesus began, “you must reflect His character. God sends rain and sunshine to both the righteous and the unrighteous, showing His love to all. You must also love and give generously, even to those who mistreat you. Repay evil with kindness.”

He continued, “The law says, ‘Do not murder,’ but hatred in your heart is like murder in God’s eyes. True righteousness isn’t just about outward actions—it’s about the condition of your heart. God desires integrity inside and out.”

“The truly happy person,” Jesus explained, “is the one who recognizes their need for God. They understand their shortcomings and seek His help. Real joy comes not from grabbing for yourself but from being kind, patient, and peaceful. Those who strive for peace, put God first, and remain faithful, even when persecuted, are blessed. Great rewards await them in heaven.”

“Lord, Teach Us to Pray!” (Matthew 6, Luke 11, Mark 11)

Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray, finding strength and guidance in His quiet moments with God. One day, His disciples, observing His devotion, asked, “Lord, teach us how to pray.”

Jesus first explained how not to pray: “Don’t pray like those who seek attention. They stand in public places, using loud and elaborate words to impress others. Instead, find a quiet place where you can speak honestly with God. Prayer isn’t about long speeches—it’s about sincerity. God knows your needs before you even ask, but He wants you to come to Him in trust.”

He then taught them what we now know as the Lord’s Prayer:

  • “Address God as your Father, acknowledging His holiness:
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.’
  • Seek His will above all:
‘Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’
  • Present your needs humbly:
‘Give us today our daily bread.’
  • Ask for forgiveness and the strength to forgive others:
‘Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.’
  • Seek protection and deliverance:
‘Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’”

Jesus emphasized, “Forgive others if you want God to forgive you. And when you pray, believe that God hears you. Trust Him to answer in the best way.”

The Two Prayers (Luke 18)

To illustrate humility in prayer, Jesus shared a parable:

“Two men went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, standing apart and praying confidently, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like others—greedy, dishonest, or sinful. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I earn.’

“The other man, a tax collector, stood at a distance, overwhelmed by shame. He couldn’t even lift his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his chest and prayed, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“It was the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who went home forgiven,” Jesus concluded. “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

The Friend at Midnight (Luke 11)

Jesus taught persistence in prayer through another story:

“Imagine a friend arrives late at night, and you have no food to offer him. You go to your neighbor’s house, knocking and asking for bread. At first, your neighbor refuses, saying his household is asleep. But because you persist, he eventually gets up and gives you what you need.

“How much more willing is your heavenly Father to answer your prayers? Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened. Your Father delights in giving good gifts to those who ask.”

Building on a Rock (Matthew 7)

Jesus ended His teaching with a parable about two builders:

“One man built his house on solid rock. When storms came, the house stood firm because its foundation was strong.

“Another man built his house on sand. When the rains came, the house collapsed because it had no foundation.

“Those who hear my words and obey them are like the wise builder, whose house stood firm. But those who ignore my words are like the foolish builder, whose house was destroyed. Build your life on my teachings, and nothing can shake you.”

Reflection

Through these teachings, Jesus emphasized humility, trust in God, and the importance of building a life rooted in His words. His lessons encourage us to focus on inner transformation, trust in God’s love, and live in obedience to His will. In doing so, we establish a foundation that withstands the storms of life.
