As King Vikram carried Betal, the spirit began recounting the story of a young woman named Kumudini. Kumudini lived alone and was often seen weeping and sorrowful, as she had no one to care for or support her. Her constant sadness and lonely tears disturbed her neighbors, but none took the time to understand or help her.

One day, a kind sage passing through the village heard Kumudini’s cries. Moved by her plight, he decided to take her under his protection and brought her to his ashram. Under the sage’s care, Kumudini’s sorrow began to fade, and she finally experienced peace and happiness in the comforting environment of the ashram.

Years later, while walking through the forest, a man named Kundan saw Kumudini and was struck by her beauty. He began to inquire about her and eventually learned of her past loneliness. Seeing her now, happy and thriving in the ashram, Kundan questioned whether the sage had taken her in out of genuine compassion or for his own interests, given how beautiful she had become.

After narrating the story, Betal asked Vikram, “Was the sage truly compassionate, or was he driven by ulterior motives?” Vikram replied, “The sage’s actions were indeed compassionate. He took Kumudini in when she was sorrowful and in need, not for her beauty or any gain. True compassion is shown by helping those who are in need without expecting anything in return.”

Betal was satisfied with Vikram’s response, as it reflected wisdom and understanding, and then flew back to his tree.

**Moral:** True compassion is selfless. It is about caring for others without expecting anything in return. Genuine kindness seeks only to relieve others’ suffering, not to gain personal benefit.
