In the ancient land where gods and demons roamed freely, there lived a cunning and ambitious demon named Vrikasura. His heart was full of greed, and his desires knew no bounds. Vrikasura sought power above all else, and he knew that only a great boon from one of the gods would allow him to achieve his dark ambitions.

Determined to gain such a boon, Vrikasura set his sights on Lord Shiva, the god known for his generosity in granting wishes to even the most fearsome of beings. Vrikasura retreated to a desolate forest and began performing severe austerities to please Lord Shiva. For days and nights, he fasted and meditated, enduring extreme pain and hardship. His devotion was relentless, and soon his sacrifices caught the attention of Shiva.

Pleased with Vrikasura’s devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him. “O Vrikasura,” Shiva said, “I am pleased with your dedication. Ask me for any boon, and it shall be yours.”

Without hesitation, Vrikasura made his request. “Grant me the power that whoever I touch on the head will instantly die.”

Shiva, bound by his word and his nature, granted the boon, unaware of Vrikasura’s true intentions. Vrikasura’s eyes gleamed with malice. With this new power, he knew he could rule over the world. But his ambition did not stop there—he wanted more. A dark thought crossed his mind: why not test this boon on Shiva himself? If Shiva could be destroyed, then there would be no one left to challenge his reign.

With a wicked smile, Vrikasura turned to Lord Shiva and lunged at him, his hand outstretched to touch Shiva’s head. Realizing the demon’s treachery, Shiva fled, knowing that even he could not withstand the deadly power he had just bestowed upon Vrikasura.

As Vrikasura chased Shiva across the heavens and earth, the entire universe trembled in fear. Who could stop this demon who now possessed such a deadly boon? The gods, too, were worried. But there was one who always stood ready to protect the balance of the cosmos—Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe.

Seeing Shiva in danger, Vishnu devised a plan to outwit the demon. He appeared before Vrikasura in the form of a charming and wise sage. “O mighty Vrikasura,” Vishnu said with a smile, “why do you chase Lord Shiva? Surely a being as powerful as you should not waste time on such trivial matters.”

Vrikasura, taken aback by Vishnu’s calm demeanor, paused. The sage’s words intrigued him, and his arrogance led him to listen.

“I have heard of the boon you received,” Vishnu continued, “but how do you know if it truly works? Perhaps Lord Shiva tricked you. You should test it first, just to be sure. Only then will you be confident in your power.”

Vrikasura, blinded by his greed and arrogance, considered the sage’s suggestion. His mind clouded with thoughts of conquest, he decided to follow the advice. Slowly, he raised his hand to his own head, intending to test the boon on himself. In that moment, the boon’s deadly power activated, and Vrikasura was instantly consumed by its force. He collapsed, lifeless, destroyed by the very gift he had sought to use for his own gain.

With Vrikasura gone, the world breathed a sigh of relief. Shiva was safe, and the balance of the universe was restored once more. Vishnu’s cleverness had saved the day, proving once again that wisdom and wit could overcome even the most dangerous of threats.

Moral of the Tale: Greed and arrogance can lead to one’s own downfall. Power without wisdom is dangerous, and those who seek to harm others often end up being harmed by their own actions. Wisdom and cleverness will always triumph over brute strength and malice.
