In the heavenly realms, Kubera, the god of wealth, was known for his immense fortune. His palaces were filled with gold, diamonds, and every treasure one could imagine. Kubera often boasted about his riches, claiming that wealth was the most powerful force in the universe. He believed that with wealth, one could control the world and achieve anything. Hearing his repeated boasts, Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, decided to teach him a lesson about the true value of sustenance.

One day, as Kubera sat in his opulent palace surrounded by jewels, Annapurna appeared before him, radiant and serene. Kubera greeted her with respect, but his pride was evident. “Welcome, Annapurna,” he said, “You honor me with your presence. Look around—my wealth is boundless. There is nothing I cannot acquire with my riches.”

Annapurna smiled gently. “Kubera, I see your wealth is vast, but I wonder if it is truly the most powerful force in the universe as you claim.”

Kubera’s eyes gleamed with confidence. “Of course it is! Wealth can buy anything—power, luxury, respect. Even food! Without wealth, people would starve.”

Annapurna raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Let us test your theory. Let us hold a contest—wealth versus food. We shall see which is more valuable.”

Kubera, intrigued but confident in his victory, agreed immediately. “Very well. What are the rules of this contest?”

Annapurna explained, “We will invite the gods, the humans, and the creatures of the world to a great feast. You, Kubera, will provide them with all the wealth and treasures they desire. I, on the other hand, will provide them only with food. We will see which brings them true satisfaction.”

Kubera laughed. “This will be an easy victory for me. Who would not choose gold and jewels over a simple meal?”

The day of the contest arrived, and both Kubera and Annapurna prepared for the event. Kubera’s palace was decorated with the finest silk, gemstones adorned every corner, and there were piles of gold, diamonds, and precious artifacts as far as the eye could see. He invited all the gods, humans, and creatures of the world to marvel at his riches. Annapurna, on the other hand, set up a humble feast of simple, nourishing food—fruits, grains, and vegetables—under the shade of a large tree.

As the guests arrived, many were initially drawn to Kubera’s dazzling display of wealth. They admired the treasures and praised Kubera for his fortune. However, as time passed, the guests began to grow hungry. They asked Kubera for food, but he could only offer them more gold and jewels. “Eat this wealth,” he said proudly, “It will bring you power and happiness.”

But no matter how much wealth Kubera offered, it could not fill their stomachs. The guests became restless and tired. Their hunger grew unbearable, and they realized that all the gold in the world could not satisfy their need for nourishment.

Eventually, the guests turned to Annapurna’s simple feast. She welcomed them with a warm smile and offered them food. As they ate, their hunger vanished, and they felt rejuvenated and content. The food nourished not only their bodies but their spirits as well. They praised Annapurna for her gift of sustenance, recognizing that true wealth lay in the ability to nourish life, not in material riches.

Kubera, watching from afar, began to realize the truth of Annapurna’s lesson. He saw that no matter how much wealth one possessed, it could never replace the fundamental need for food and nourishment. The guests who had initially admired his treasures were now gathered around Annapurna, finding joy and fulfillment in the simplest of meals.

Humbled, Kubera approached Annapurna. “You have shown me the true power of food and nourishment,” he admitted. “My wealth is meaningless without the sustenance that sustains life. Food is indeed the greatest wealth.”

Annapurna nodded. “Wealth has its place, but without nourishment, it is worthless. Food is the essence of life, and it is through food that the world thrives. Never forget, Kubera, that true riches lie not in gold, but in the ability to sustain and nurture.”

From that day forward, Kubera no longer boasted about his wealth. Instead, he recognized the importance of nourishment and shared his riches to help provide food and sustenance for those in need.

Moral: True wealth lies not in material possessions but in the ability to nourish and sustain life. Food, which sustains all beings, is far more valuable than riches, for without it, wealth is meaningless.
