Hanuman and Surya as His Teacher
After his childhood filled with playful mischief, Hanuman yearned to gain knowledge. His sharp mind and devotion to learning led him to seek out Surya, the Sun God, as his teacher. Surya, being all-knowing and a symbol of wisdom, was the perfect guide to teach Hanuman the scriptures. With his unshakable resolve, Hanuman approached the mighty Surya and humbly requested, “O Lord of the Sun, please teach me the Vedas and scriptures so that I may grow in knowledge and serve better.”
Surya, though moved by Hanuman’s request, was bound by his duty to continue moving across the sky. He said, “Hanuman, I cannot remain still to teach you. I must move constantly, as that is my eternal duty.” But Hanuman was not easily dissuaded. Determined to learn, he proposed a solution: “I shall fly alongside you, facing you as you move, so that I can listen and learn while you fulfill your duty.”
Impressed by Hanuman’s determination and devotion, Surya agreed. Every day, as the Sun moved across the sky, Hanuman flew backwards, matching Surya’s pace. He absorbed the teachings of the scriptures, the Vedas, and all forms of knowledge with remarkable speed and clarity. Surya was amazed by Hanuman’s ability to learn while maintaining perfect balance and concentration in the air. After mastering all that Surya had to offer, Hanuman, ever humble, bowed in gratitude.
When Hanuman asked how he could repay his guru, Surya smiled and said, “Your dedication is enough, but remember to use your knowledge in the service of good.” Thus, Hanuman’s learning was complete, and he became not only a great devotee but also a wise scholar, ready to serve Lord Rama with both strength and wisdom.
